DEDICATED SAILBOAT POWER

Volvo Penta is dedicated to providing efficient and reliable sailboat power with first-class onboard comfort and low overall emissions. And this not only means engines. As a true innovator, Volvo Penta is behind important firsts such as the Saildrive, the patented elliptical 3 and 4-blade folding propellers and the unique built-in charging sensor. This year’s line-up of engines and accessories means that you can find a compact and light, complete power option for any type of sailing vessel.

EFFICIENT CHARGING is becoming more and more import for sailors. Volvo Penta’s unique built-in charging sensor ensured optimal charging voltage at the battery by controlling the outgoing voltage from the alternator to compensate for voltage drops. It is standard on the 2000 and D2 series, giving optimal for single or multiple battery banks without the risk of overcharging. The D3 features a powerful 140A alternator.

LOW REVS at cruising speed means minimal noise and vibrations for excellent onboard comfort. The D2 and D3 series have a rated rpm of only 3,000 with a typical cruising speed of 2,000 to 2,500 rpm. Low engine speed also makes it possible to use a larger propeller for better propulsion efficiency with easier handling.

QUALITY ACCESSORIES Volvo Penta range of accessories to go with your engine. Everything from hot water systems for instrumentation, fuel decontaminators and a full range of propellers. The patented elliptical 3 and 4-blade folding propellers for engines up to 120 hp offer high thrust and speed with very low noise and vibration levels under power.

THE SAILDRIVE is designed for compact installation with quiet and practically vibration-free running, low under-water resistance and high thrust under power. Unique Volvo Penta features include electrical isolation to minimize the risk of corrosion and the crash absorber that keeps the engine safely in place in the event of an impact. New for the model year 2004 is a new version for engines up to 75 hp and simpler service. The oil can now be changed from inside the boat and the anode can be replaced without removing the propeller.

The characteristics of the engine are vitally important for your safety and boating pleasure. High torque where it is most needed means easy manoeuvring plus plenty of power to drive the boat safely in a strong head wind.

RELIABILITY is the single most important factor in a Volvo Penta engine, proven in the Volvo Ocean Race and in all the engines successfully operated by charter companies. As an example, we use a relay-activated starter solenoid on all models. This eliminates the risk of a voltage drop and ensures safe and reliable starts. A robust and durable base engine, complete with freshwater cooling a standard on all models, ensures a long operating life.

LOW EXHAUST EMISSIONS is another top priority. Efficient combustion produces very little smoke and low overall emissions. The all-new D3 features electronically controlled common rail fuel injection, which feeds the fuel to the cylinders with extreme precision. The result is low fuel consumption and minimal emission that will meet the upcoming 2006 EU and US emission regulations.
